Americans Deserve Answers on Abortion Coercion, Limits

Washington, D.C. – Ahead of the first debate of 2024 between former President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America issued three significant questions Harris has yet to answer on abortion:

1. What limit, if any, do you support on abortion? Do you plan to push for a Minnesota-style law nationally that allows abortion in all nine months? 

• • As a U.S. senator, Harris co-sponsored legislation that would block any state in the country from placing limits on abortion and effectively mandate all-trimester abortion without limits throughout pregnancy. The Biden-Harris administration strongly supported this bill. Most recently, Harris has been unwilling to name a limit she can support.
  • Harris’ running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, signedone of the country’s most extreme laws to remove all limits on abortion at any point in pregnancy in Minnesota.
  • Late-term abortions are not “rare”: Around 10,000 abortions a year occur after 21 weeks of pregnancy, mostly for the same reasons as earlier abortions. At least 55,000 abortions a year occur after 15 weeks of pregnancy, a point when science shows unborn babies can feel pain.

2. Research shows over 60% of women who had abortions reported pressure to abort from boyfriends, family or other sources. What will you do to ensure women aren’t pushed into abortions they don’t want? 

• • Countless American women – including Britney Spears– have experienced abortion coercion, often from partners. Some have even experienced a new form of domestic violence where they are poisoned by abortion drugs. Yet the Biden-Harris administration allows mail-order abortion drugs without any in-person doctor visit where warning signs of trafficking and abuse could be identified.
  • Walz signed legislation explicitly removing safeguards for women against abortion coercion from Minnesota law.

3. What would you say to the millions of women who have received support from pregnancy centers and are concerned with your comments about shutting these centers down? 

• • In 2022, nearly 3,000 pregnancy centers nationwide provided $367 million in goods and services (such as free ultrasounds, diapers, formula, baby clothes, prenatal and parenting education, financial and housing assistance, and more) to women and families, with eight in 10 centers providing medical services. Yet Harris has praised efforts to shut down pregnancy centers, and Walz eliminated a nearly 20-year-old state program that provided over $3 million annually to support the aid they provide.

“Kamala Harris is the most pro-abortion presidential candidate in our nation’s history, but so far, the media have not questioned her on this fundamental claim from President Trump since she became the Democrats’ nominee. This debate should be a clarifying moment. The overwhelming majority of Americans favor limits on abortion at least by a point when unborn babies feel pain, and they support the vital safety net that pregnancy centers, maternity homes and other charitable organizations provide.

“Harris and Walz brand abortion as ‘freedom,’ but their policy agenda of promoting abortion as the first and sometimes only ‘solution’ to unexpected pregnancy – even in the seventh, eighth or ninth month for any reason – and cutting off life-affirming options for women who want and need them is anything but freeing. Countless women across America live with the pain of coerced and unwanted abortions, and they are listening. It shouldn’t be hard to acknowledge reality and say that no woman should ever have to endure that pain.

“The people deserve to know where Harris draws the line, and how she plans to support and value all women and their children, not just abortion.”
