This week, media continued picking up on the federal defamation lawsuit outgoing Rep. Steve Driehaus filed against the SBA List last week. Several conservative outlets published columns in SBA List’s support while some mainstream outlets continued reporting on the story.
Later in the week, SBA List announced its co-sponsorship of an Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman debate with Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) and the Daily Caller. SBA List’s involvement drew national attention to the debate, with MSNBC.com’s analyses calling SBA List’s involvement a sign that the abortion issue would be front-and-center in the RNC race.
On the same day, Rep. Joe Upton was confirmed as Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and appointed pro-life champion Rep. Joe Pitts as Chairman of the important Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health – a position from which Pitts will have considerable influence over the passage of laws affecting women, taxpayers and the unborn. SBA List issued its congratulations to Pitts along with a call to prioritize the passage of the two pieces of legislation called for in its Stop Abortion Funding campaign.
On Thursday, the Senate voted on a version of the Department of Defense Authorization Bill carrying the Burris Amendment which would allow elective abortion procedures to be performed on foreign and domestic military bases. SBA List issued a rebuke to the pro-abortion Senate leadership, calling on Congress to “oppose this bill in its current form. It’s time for Congress to listen to the pro-life American majority by passing laws that save lives, not destroy them.” Media continued to note the pro-life movement’s opposition to the bill’s pro-abortion stipulations, noting, however, that with so many other provisions in it – like Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and important military funding – this was likely not the last we would hear of the bill.
