On Tuesday, Rep. Steve Driehaus’ lawyers filed to withdraw his complaint before the Ohio Elections Commission (OEC) against the Susan B. Anthony List over billboards it attempted to post in his district (OH-01) in the days leading up to the November election. SBA List received notice of the request in a letter received on Tuesday and issued a statement calling the development “a victory for truth,” but also vowed to continue its federal lawsuit against the Ohio law which had allowed Driehaus’ complaint to advance just long enough to stop the SBA List’s free speech about his vote in favor the pro-abortion health care bill. The OEC must now conduct a hearing on December 2 to formally accept the request for withdrawal.
On Friday, rumors also began circulating that Congressman Fred Upton had emerged as the favored nominee for Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee. Known for a weak voting record on Life issues, Upton’s nomination would appoint him to the highest post on a committee that acts as the “gateway” committee for pro-life legislation and abortion issues. SBA List released a statement that morning, calling for Rep. Joe Pitts’ (R-PA) appointment as Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee in order to ensure that a true pro-life leader sat on the committee. SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser also published a blog post on RedState calling for Pitts’ appointment.
Throughout the week, media also began sounding off on a letter sent to Congress signed by leaders of GOProud and certain Libertarian Tea Party organizations, asking the GOP leadership to stay away from social issues in the next Congress. SBA List was included in several stories pointing out how ignoring social values would be an unwise move for Republican Members of Congress, many of whom were elected because of their pro-life commitments.
