Rick Santorum’s resounding support among abortion opponents should come as no surprise to even casual observers of the Republican presidential contest.

But the extent of that advantage is surprising.

Few voting blocs have been as consistent in their support in recent weeks, and Mr. Santorum may owe these voters for delivering wins in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee, according to exit polls of six of the most recent primary states where voters were asked specifically about their level of opposition to abortion.

“The strong pro-life vote has kept him in the game,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, a prominent antiabortion group that has run ads and mobilized voters to support Mr. Santorum.
