In his first appearance on Meet the Press since declaring his candidacy for president in 2012, Rick Santorum made clear just how committed he is to protecting children in the womb. Toward the end of the interview, Meet the Press host David Gregory questioned Santorum about his position on abortion, particularly if he would allow for abortions in the cases of rape or incest. To some ears, Gregory’s question might carry a tinge of, “Are you really this extreme?” in its delivery. We face a battle to show that there is nothing extreme about the idea that mothers, in spite of the soul crushing realities of rape and incest, can overcome the violence done to them and give life to an innocent child with the help of others who love and actively support both mother and child. As the 2012 presidential election heats up it is not only heartening to see a candidate who holds such views but also one who can articulate them clearly and with conviction on one of the nation’s most widely watched political programs. While virtually every political pundit is hammering home the mantra that the economy and jobs will be the only real topic up for debate during the campaign cycle and that social issues will be forced into irrelevance over the next 16 months, we can hope that fearless advocates for Life such as Rick Santorum will be able to raise the profile on the abortion issue by virtue of their uncompromising commitment to defending the unborn.
