Washington, D.C. â Following Thursdayâs debate between Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA), SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser issued the following statement:
âLast nightâs debate shocked the national conscience when California Governor Gavin Newsom refused to support any protections for babies in the womb. Even when given several opportunities, No-Limits Newsom would not list a single limit he supports on abortion â not even in the seventh, eighth or ninth month. This stunning declaration from Newsom confirms to the American people that the former Democratic platform of âsafe, legal and rareâ abortions is now in the ash heap of history. Todayâs Democratic Party stands for all-trimester abortions, for any reason on demand. That position is not only inhumane but wildly out of step with the nearly three fourths of Americans who want limits on abortion after 15 weeks when science shows babies feel pain.â

âGovernor Newsomâs statement that late-term abortions almost always occur for fetal anomalies or to protect the life of the mother is categorically and scientifically false. Itâs important to note that only two states (Florida and Utah) bother to collect data related to late-term abortions. California refuses to provide any abortion data, and it hasnât been included in the CDCâs annual abortion report since 1997. However, available state data shows 88% of late abortions occur for elective social and financial reasons. Abortion industry researchers report that indecision and relationship breakdown frequently motivate women to obtain late abortions. We also know that each year, over 50,000 abortions are performed after 15 weeks of gestation, when unborn babies can feel pain. As an OB-GYN with over 30 years of experience, itâs imperative that Americans understand that late-term abortions arenât a fringe issue, but a serious problem that demands action.â
