WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Susan B. Anthony List celebrated a victory for its Stop Abortion Funding campaign in the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote to repeal the pro-abortion Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) by a vote of 245 to 189. SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said:
“The problems allowing taxpayer funded abortion in the health care law passed last Spring still exist. President Obama’s executive order claiming to fix the abortion funding problems in the bill neglects to address the accounting gimmick and does not carry the weight of law – something former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel admitted earlier this week.
“Today’s vote to repeal the pro-abortion health care law is the first step in rescinding the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade. We must avail ourselves of every opportunity to protect American taxpayers from being complicit in abortion. The electorate sent this message loud and clear last November and, most notably, in districts were self-described pro-life Democrats who voted for health care were defeated. The Republican leadership is listening. That is the first step in righting a grave wrong.
“We urge the pro-life House to now vote for the replacement resolution that instructs committees to put forth legislation that, among other provisions, will provide sufficient statutory protection for the unborn and the conscience of health care workers.”
Today, the House of Representatives voted to pass a resolution to move forward with repeal of the pro-abortion health care reform law. Tomorrow, January 20, the House is expected to vote on a motion instructing congressional committees to “report legislation including provisions that prohibit taxpayer funding of abortions and provide conscience protections for health care providers.”
The SBA List has been mobilizing its ever-growing 280,000-activist grassroots network to call and e-mail Members of Congress, asking them to vote to repeal the pro-abortion health care law. The SBA List’s Stop Abortion Funding campaign also includes an online petition (www.StopAbortionFunding.com) which has garnered nearly 40,000 signatures as well as efforts to encourage Congress to pass two priority pieces of pro-life legislation. The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), will create a government-wide statutory prohibition on taxpayer funding of abortion, repealing abortion funding in Obamacare. The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, sponsored by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), will ensure that tax dollars are not sent to abortion providers under Title X family planning grants.
The Susan B. Anthony List spent $11 million during the 2010 midterm election cycle. Overall, the SBA List was involved in 90 races including 62 wins and 28 losses. Successes included: defeating 15 of 20 so-called “pro-life” Democrats who voted for abortion funding in the health care reform bill; increasing the number of pro-life women in the House by 70 percent; filling the void of pro-life women in the U.S. Senate and increasing the number of pro-life women governors from one to four.
