Governor’s Attempts to Bully Lawmakers Out of Step With Public Opinion

RALEIGH, N.C. – America’s leading pro-life group today joined with North Carolina Values Coalition to launch a five-figure digital campaign in response to North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s targeted attacks on legislators to advance his opposition to the Care for Women, Children and Families Act. The pro-abortion governor began efforts in Mecklenburg and New Hanover counties over the weekend to bully legislators to sustain his anticipated veto on the legislation that would protect life at 12 weeks, provide paid parental leave for teachers and allocate funds for childcare.

According to a new poll, 62% of voters support protecting life by 12 weeks. The ads responding to Governor Cooper’s bullying of Sen. Michael Lee and representatives John Bradford, Ted Davis, and Tricia Cotham will run on social media starting today through next week.

Caitlin Connors, southern regional director for SBA Pro-Life America, commented:

“We thank North Carolina legislators for siding with the people over Gov. Cooper on protecting babies who can feel pain from abortion and allocating $160 million to support women and families. Gov. Cooper’s attempts to bully lawmakers are out of step with the will of 62% of North Carolinians who want to protect babies by 12 weeks and save thousands of lives every year. The abortion-on-demand agenda held by the governor and Attorney General Josh Stein is wildly unpopular in their state and with Americans at large with two-thirds of the country against painful late-term abortion.”

SB 20 allows for exceptions including rape, incest, and life and health of the mother. The measure also provides $160 million in support for children, families and maternal health, including $75 million to expand access to childcare and $20 million for maternity and paternity leave for teachers and state employees.

Based on the most recent CDC data, protecting unborn children at 12 weeks would impact over 3,000 lives within the state each year, not including reducing abortion tourism from other states.

By 12 weeks’ gestation, all major organs have formed and the heart has beat over 10 million times. At this stage, babies suck their thumbs and already have a right-hand or left-hand preference. Prominent facial features including the nose, cheeks, eyes and ears are recognizable; teeth are developing; and the body responds to touch.
