Sen. Riepe Allows Painful Late-term Abortions to Continue

LINCOLN, Neb.Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America today issued the following statement after the cloture vote failed by one vote:

“Human rights battles are not won overnight. Victory over great injustices takes time, patience and persistence. We’ve come so far as a nation in the last year with tens of thousands of lives saved through state laws. We know Nebraska will enact protections for innocent unborn children,” said Adam Scwhwend, western regional director for SBA Pro-Life America.

“The Nebraska Heartbeat bill is the consensus of Nebraska with nearly 60 percent support for the bill, including two-thirds of Independents. We thank Gov. Pillen and Sen. Joni Albrecht for standing with Nebraskans who support protecting babies with a beating heart, and we know their efforts will continue. LB 626 would have advanced today had it not been for the betrayal of Sen. Merv Riepe. As someone who has pledged to be a pro-life lawmaker, Sen. Riepe must meet the commitment he made to protect babies with a heartbeat rather than to side with the vocal pro-abortion minority and their extreme late-term abortion agenda.

“Time and again strong pro-life leaders are elected for their commitment to protect babies and serve mothers. There is still time this legislative session to pass this bill that reflects the science and the compassion of Nebraskans.”

Today’s vote was the second vote cast by the full legislative body to end a filibuster on LB626. In the vote held two weeks prior, Sen. Riepe voted with the majority to advance the bill.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is a network of more than one million pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
