Landrieu Evades Question on Popular, Compassionate Legislation to Protect Babies Capable of Feeling Painful Late Abortions
Washington, D.C – Tonight Senator Mary Landrieu misled Louisiana voters on abortion during the final senatorial debate. Senator Landrieu, who has a 100 percent pro-abortion voting record since 2009, said “I do not support abortion. Period.”
In response, Marjorie Dannenfelser president of the national pro-life Susan B. Anthony Listand its partner, Women Speak Out PAC, responded saying:
“Senator Landrieu’s answer tonight was a study in political evasion. It is almost impossible to decipher her position from her contradictory statements. She has an opportunity right now to become a sponsor of a bill that would save lives. Why has she not done so? The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act is popular, compassionate legislation to protect babies after five months. The people of Louisiana deserve a senator who takes action. Senator Landrieu has not. Bill Cassidy’s pro-life words and votes, on the other hand, are in synch.”
Since April, the Women Speak Out PAC ground team has knocked on more than 140,000 doors across Louisiana to reach low-propensity pro-life voters. Among targeted voters in Louisiana, up to 91 percent of voters are less likely to vote for Senator Landrieu after learning about her pro-abortion record.
The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would save more than 18,000 lives a year. National polling by Quinnipiac, National Journal, Huffington Post, NBC/Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post/ABC News all found that a plurality or majority of Americans support limiting abortion after the five month mark and that women support the measure in higher proportions than men. Thirteen states, including Louisiana, have passed state-based versions of this legislation.
The Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
