63% of Americans Oppose Dangerous Mail-Order Abortion Drugs

Washington, D.C.Walgreens, the nation’s second largest pharmacy chain, may walk back its decision to distribute abortion drugs by mail in some states, according to a news report. Earlier this month 20 state attorneys general reminded Walgreens and CVS that distributing chemical abortion drugs RU-486, mifepristone and Mifeprex in the mail is expressly prohibited by federal law, as well as a violation of their states’ laws.

Walgreens and CVS announced they would obtain and sell abortion pills by mail after the Biden Food and Drug Administration decided to allow mifepristone to be distributed without an in-person doctor visit.

“America’s pharmacies must not ignore the data that show mail-order abortion drugs are unsafe. They should not be in the business of selling abortion or sending deadly drugs through the mail,” said Katie Glenn, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America’s state policy director. “A woman who has a chemical abortion is at 53% greater risk of an ER visit for abortion complications, including severe bleeding, need for surgery and even death. We thank Attorney General Andrew Bailey and his fellow attorneys general for firmly reminding big companies that they must follow state and federal laws that prohibit mail-order abortion drugs. Moreover, 63% of Americans oppose sending dangerous abortion drugs by mail. We urge all concerned Americans to keep advocating against illegal policies that harm women and children and to vote with their feet and wallets, and other pharmacies to make their policies clear now.”

Chemical abortion, sometimes called “the abortion pill,” is a two-drug regimen taken up to 70 days (10 weeks) or even later into pregnancy and causes the death of the unborn child. The first drug blocks the natural hormone progesterone, starving the developing baby of hormonal support, while the second drug induces labor to expel the baby from the womb.

The FDA has ignored U.S. and international research that shows mail-order abortion drugs are dangerous:

  • Major international studies show that the abortion drug regimen poses four times the risks of surgical abortion.
  • Federal Medicaid data show that the rate of ER visits related to chemical abortion has gone up more than 500% since mifepristone was approved.
  • A woman who has a chemical abortion is at 53% greater risk of an ER visit for abortion complications.
