Abby Johnson on Planned Parenthood's Use of IUDs

This week on her blog, Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood employee turned pro-life advocate, speaks on another injustice going on in abortion clinics: the protocol concerning IUDs.

An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a form of birth control inserted into the cervix that works primarily by preventing fertilized eggs from implanting on the uterine lining. Planned Parenthood describes it as a “small, ‘T-shaped’ device used to prevent pregnancy” that is “safe, effective, and long-lasting.”

However, as Abby Johnson reveals, Planned Parenthood’s IUD protocol states that the devices could be inserted on women already a few days pregnant to induce an abortion. Johnson writes,

“How many children have been aborted because of this dangerous protocol? What is the real number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood? We will never know. Did we tell patients that this protocol would abort their child? Of course not.”

IUDs, especially when used in this manner, are not safe, as Planned Parenthood would have you believe. Johnson remembers:

“A woman came in one day complaining of severe abdominal pain. She had an IUD. During her exam, it was determined that her IUD was the source of her discomfort…it would have to be removed. I came in to assist. I couldn’t believe what I saw. On the end of that IUD was a tiny baby.”

Given the dangers, why is Planned Parenthood so quick to recommend IUDs? Johnson writes:

“Planned Parenthood pays less than $300.00 for an IUD…they are reimbursed over $750.00 from the federal government (our tax dollars)… Patients first? Prevention first? No. Money first…and always.”
