Planned Parenthood Suing to Protect Profit Margins
BOISE, ID – Gov. Brad Little has signed a measure to protect minor girls from being transported for an abortion with the intent of concealing it from her parents. Senate Bill 242 protects parental rights by making abortion trafficking a crime eligible for two to five years in prison. The new law applies to surgical abortions as well as someone who attempts to procure dangerous abortion pills that can cause hemorrhaging, the need for surgery or even death.
The signing comes a month after Planned Parenthood opened an abortion facility in Ontario, Oregon, one mile from the Idaho border. Planned Parenthood yesterday announced they would challenge the law in court so that the Ontario facility and others can continue to make a profit from performing abortions on teen girls without parents’ knowledge.
SBA Pro-Life America’s State Policy Director Katie Daniel celebrated the first-of-its kind bill becoming law:
“With too many cases of the abortion industry willfully covering up abuse and siding with traffickers, abortion trafficking is a nationwide issue. Through this landmark law, Gov. Little and pro-life legislative leaders have established one of the most enforceable parental consent policies in the country – setting a standard for deterring and punishing such horrific exploitation of young girls.
“Parental rights are now a main target of Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion extremist groups. In Ohio, the ACLU is attacking the state’s parental consent law, pledging to eliminate it through a ballot measure or lawsuit to strip parents of their right to keep their daughters safe. In states like Alaska and Indiana, Planned Parenthood runs to the courts arguing that a so-called right to abortion cannot be ‘burdened’ by parental consent. The abortion lobby’s agenda is dramatically out of step with public opinion and parents everywhere must be on guard.”
In his signing statement, Gov. Little clearly stated the impact of the law:
“House Bill 242 does not criminalize, preclude, or otherwise impair interstate travel, nor does it limit an adult woman from obtaining an abortion in another state. Rather the ‘abortion trafficking’ provision in the bill seeks only to prevent unemancipated minor girls from being taken across state lines for an abortion without the knowledge and consent of her parent or guardian.”
Idaho protects unborn children throughout pregnancy. The law was previously challenged in court, but the Idaho Supreme Court upheld it, determining there is no “right to abortion” in the state constitution. Idaho’s law protects an estimated 1,680 lives every year.
