Unborn children and women on the east coast are a little safer today. Two abortionists were recently charged with murder for the killing of viable babies at their illegal abortion practice in Elkton, Maryland after being arrested. Stephen Chase Brigham had no license to practice in Maryland, but ran a secret late-term abortion clinic in that state anyway, with the help of Nicola Irene Riley, who carried out the late-term abortions for him. According to LifeNews, Brigham would start the late-term abortions in his office in New Jersey, then drive the women to Elkton to complete the abortions.
The practice came to light when a teenager’s life was endangered by a botched abortion in August, 2010. A police raid on the clinic found the remains of 35 late-term babies in freezer. Some of these were around 35 weeks old – nearly full term.
After this incident, Operation Rescue began calling for criminal charges against the abortionists. Brigham was taken into custody in Camden, New Jersey, and Riley was arrested in Salt Lake City, Utah. They both are facing extradition to Maryland.
Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said, “We have worked for over a year to make sure Brigham and Riley were brought to justice. We kept the story in the public eye, and followed up with police and prosecutors. This is a victory for the pro-life movement.”
In response to the news of the arrests, Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life commented, “This case, as it progresses, is key for the American people to pay attention to, because it exposes the abortion industry for what it is. Abortionists have no respect for human life, much less for human laws. Even those who believe abortion should be legal can join with us to stop the out of control practices of people like Brigham and Riley. And the time is now.”
