Kristy is a 20-year-old from Arizona who recently joined our Arizona field team, and she has already made an impressive impact by canvassing across western Arizona. As a lifelong Christian, Kristyâs faith has instilled in her a passion for the pro-life movement.
We spoke with Kristy to gain insight into her experience as a pro-life canvasser and the impact sheâs making in Arizona by engaging with people at their homes for life.
SBA: Can you share your background regarding the pro-life issue? When did you first identify as pro-life?
Kristy: I grew up in a Christian household where my parents instilled pro-life values in me. However, it wasn’t until middle school that I learned what abortion was and began to truly understand what it meant to be pro-life. The truth about abortion was deeply upsetting to me, yet I didnât know how to talk about it with others without becoming emotional. It wasn’t until much later in life that I learned to calmly discuss abortion and the horrors associated with it.
SBA: How would you describe the job of a canvasser?
Kristy: My job as a Women Speak Out (WSO) canvasser is to talk with voters at their homes and share WSOâs pro-life message while also shedding light on the extreme abortion policies of the Democrats in this yearâs elections.
To do this effectively, I approach voters with compassion and try to have a genuine conversation. If someone identifies as pro-abortion, I dig a little deeper to discuss the late-term abortion policies that the left supports. More often than not I find that voters actually disagree with late-term abortion practices. This opens the door for me to highlight how the Democrats on their ballot this November back these extreme positions, which often leads to a shift in their perspective and even encourages them to consider voting pro-life.
SBA: What aspects of the pro-life movement give you the most hope for the future?
Kristy: That even self-proclaimed âpro-choiceâ individuals I meet while canvassing often change their tune when I discuss the extreme late-term abortion policies of the Democrats. When you really break it down, most people support some limits on abortion; they just need to be informed to see how radical current abortion practices in many states are. Once people truly understand what happens during abortions, they realize in their hearts that itâs wrong. That gives me hope that if the pro-life movement focuses on educating people, we can persuade a lot of voters to join our side.
SBA: Do you feel that your work as a canvasser is making a difference?
Kristy: I absolutely believe Iâm making a difference. Most people just arenât aware of how terrible abortion is or how radical the Democratsâ position on it can be. As a WSO canvasser, I provide voters with the facts about abortion and the extreme positions the Democrats take. I really think that informing these targeted voters in battleground states helps open their eyes to the pro-life point of view.
