Lincoln, NE – Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser is in Nebraska today visiting Gov. Jim Pillen and pregnancy center leaders to highlight the state’s efforts to serve women and children. Dannenfelser’s visit will include a pregnancy center tour and roundtable discussion as part of an effort to highlight the policies in pro-life states across the country to serve mothers.
This legislative session, Nebraska lawmakers passed a law on tax credits for pregnancy centers that provide free ultrasound, diapers, strollers, baby clothes and more to babies and mothers in need. Gov. Pillen signed that bill into law as well as a measure to extend the time that newborns can be surrendered at a hospital, fire station, law enforcement agency or emergency care provider. Also this year, the Governor issued a proclamation declaring 2024 as the year to advance Nebraska’s culture of life and launched AGoodLife.NE.Gov with resources for moms and babies.
Nebraska is one of many states that has increased post-Dobbs support to women and children. Florida allocated $25 million for pregnancy help centers; North Carolina established new funds for childcare and paid parental leave for teachers and state employees; and West Virginia Gov. Justice established the Mothers and Babies Support Program to aid women in need.
Dannenfelser thanked Gov. Pillen for his leadership:
“We thank Gov. Jim Pillen and those leading Nebraska’s pregnancy centers for their efforts to support moms and babies in the state, and for welcoming us to Nebraska as our first stop to highlight the work of pro-life leaders. After enacting a critical 12-week protection into law last year, Nebraska’s pregnancy centers are coming alongside women with unplanned pregnancies to offer free ultrasounds, counseling, diapers, formula and housing assistance. Gov. Pillen and legislative leaders have taken action to support Nebraska’s pregnancy centers with tax credits so that more women have help during pregnancy and after a child is born.”
In May of 2023, Nebraska became one of 24 states that protects life in the womb after the first trimester. Gov. Pillen signed a measure to protect life 10 weeks earlier than it was previously protected and eliminate elective painful, late-term abortions in the state The 12-week protection that saves babies at the point when their hearts have beat over 10 million times includes rape, incest and life of the mother exceptions.
By 12 weeks’ gestation, all major organs have formed. At this stage, babies suck their thumbs and already have a right-hand or left-hand preference. Prominent facial features including the nose, cheeks, eyes and ears are recognizable; teeth are developing; and the body responds to touch. For more information on fetal development, see Charlotte Lozier Institute’s “12 Facts at 12 Weeks.”
