Dannenfelser: HB 465 âempowers womenâ and âholds abortion businesses accountableâ
Washington, D.C. â On Friday, Gov. Pat McCrory (R-NC) signed into law HB 465, the Women and Childrenâs Protection Act of 2015. This landmark law was the top legislative priority of SBA List and the North Carolina Values Coalition.
âThis pro-life, pro-woman legislation empowers women and holds abortion businesses accountable,â said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. âWe are grateful to the North Carolina General Assembly for working together to protect women and children.â
The law â championed by SBA List National Pro-Life Womenâs Caucus legislators â will ensure that mothers have at least 72 hours to reflect upon their options before potentially undergoing the life-altering decision of having an abortion. Further, the law closes the loophole in the stateâs 20-week abortion limit so that only âmedical emergenciesâ qualify for late-term abortions, ensures that only qualified physicians are permitted to perform abortions, ensures annual inspections of abortion businesses with the results publicly published, strengthens annual reporting requirements, and improves conscience protections for medical personnel who do not wish to participate in abortions.
âHB 465 is a major victory that will protect women and save the lives of unborn children in North Carolina,â said SBA List State Director and NC Values Coalition Leader Tami Fitzgerald. âAbortion is not âhealth care,â and this bill recognizes that because abortion always ends a life, women should have time to contemplate its risks and consequences. We applaud members of the House and Senate for working together to create a strong pro-life, pro-woman bill.â
