‘Full Confidence’ Senate Will Confirm Before the Election

Washington, D.C. –  Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised President Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court to fill the vacant seat left by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

This evening SBA List launched a six-figure digital ad buy featuring a video about Barrett, part of an overall seven-figure investment specifically for the Supreme Court.

“President Trump has chosen an absolute all-star in Judge Amy Coney Barrett to serve as our nation’s newest Supreme Court justice,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Amy Coney Barrett is a brilliant jurist in the mold of the late Justice Scalia, and President Trump could not have made a stronger selection to fill this Supreme Court vacancy. We have full confidence that the pro-life Senate majority will move swiftly to confirm her before the election.

“An accomplished woman of bold conviction, Amy Barrett withstood outrageous personal attacks on her Catholic faith from pro-abortion senators with grace and integrity during her 2017 confirmation hearing. Judge Barrett has shown courage, wisdom, and brilliance during her tenure on the 7th Circuit. Her experience and expertise make her extremely qualified to serve on the nation’s highest court.

“We call on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to speak out forcefully against pending attacks on Judge Barrett’s Catholic faith, and we call on them to immediately release their Supreme Court candidate list.”

Barrett has served on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals since 2017 after being confirmed by a vote of 55-43. A summa cum laude graduate of Notre Dame Law School, she joined the school’s faculty after serving as a law clerk to Judge Laurence Silberman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Barrett and her husband Jesse have seven children, including two adopted from Haiti and a young son with Down syndrome. The Barretts live in South Bend, Indiana.

Background:

In Planned Parenthood v. Comm’r of the Ind. Dep’t of Health (2018), Barrett joined Judge Frank Easterbrook’s forceful dissent in a challenge to Indiana’s law, signed by then-Governor Mike Pence, banning eugenic discrimination abortions and requiring the dignified disposition of human fetal remains. The latter portion of the law was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2019.

Barrett has also joined an opinion by Chief Judge Diane Sykes urging the Supreme Court to reconsider Hill v. Colorado, which restricts the free speech of pro-life sidewalk counselors by imposing “buffer zones” at abortion facilities.

Exit polling on Election Day 2016 found that 21% of voters identified the Supreme Court vacancy as their most important issue. These voters overwhelmingly supported Donald Trump (57% to 41%).

SBA List and its partner Women Speak Out PAC are working to reach seven million voters by Election Day through mail, digital, phones, and door to door conversations across eight presidential and Senate battlegrounds. The team is speaking to and educating pro-life and persuadable voters about the Supreme Court vacancy and plans to launch grassroots media events in these battlegrounds.

SBA List has also relaunched its ProLifeCourt.com coalition, composed of 61 national and state-based pro-life groups whose coordinated efforts helped to confirm Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
