SCOTUS Hears Oral Arguments Today on Law That Saves Unborn Children & Protects Mothers

Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) is proud to support Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments today on the Texas Heartbeat Act. The abortion industry and the Biden administration are suing Texas over its law protecting unborn babies when their heartbeat can be detected. The Supreme Court has declined requests to block the law and it remains in effect during litigation.

A poll released last week by the University of Houston and Texas Southern University found that 55% of Texans support laws like the Heartbeat Act, including 58% of Latinos, 52% of women, and 55% of Independents. Nationally, more likely voters support Texas’ law (46%) than do not (43%). Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that the state’s abortion rate has fallen 50% since the law took effect.

This session the U.S. Supreme Court will consider Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case involving Mississippi’s Gestational Age Act which would stop abortion beyond 15 weeks. The Court will hear oral arguments on December 1, and will address whether all pre-viability abortion limits are unconstitutional.

“The Texas Heartbeat Act saves countless babies with beating hearts and protects mothers every day it is in effect,” SBA List Vice President of Communications Mallory Quigley said. “Texas proves we can love both – protecting unborn children in the law and serving women and families through initiatives like the state’s $100 million per year Alternatives to Abortion program. But for two generations, the U.S. Supreme Court has shackled states like Texas to a radical policy of abortion on demand until birth, well past the point when unborn babies can clearly feel pain. The overwhelming majority of Americans agree this is inhumane.

“We stand with Attorney General Paxton and our Texas allies in calling on the Court to make the right decision today, as well as in the Dobbs late abortion case, when the Court has a landmark opportunity to reconsider its extreme precedents. It is time to modernize our laws – all states deserve the right to protect life and enact laws that reflect the values of their people.”

Earlier this year, SBA List launched a nationwide campaign asserting the humanity of unborn children. Public opinion polls consistently show a strong majority of Americans reject pro-abortion extremism.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
