Monumental Victory for Freedom of Religion and Conscience
WASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood in their religious freedom lawsuits against the Obama Administration’s HHS Preventative Service Mandate. The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) applauded the Court’s decision.
“This is a great victory for religious liberty – the bedrock of our founding,” said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “In living out our religious convictions, there are certain things we must not do. This is why we are at a watershed moment. Religious people will no longer be ordered to take action that our religion says we must not take.
“We thank the courageous Hahn and Green families for standing strong. They have had to endure the abuse of the radical abortion lobby and others who say they respect diversity but, in fact, endorse and impose conformity. Their message that women want free abortifacient drugs – and that they value these drugs above religious liberty – is demeaning to all American women and will be rejected by voters nationwide this fall,” continued Dannenfelser. “Americans of faith and conscience have been vindicated and this will be a galvanizing moment for the vast majority of citizens who vehemently objected to this mandate and the elected leaders who thrust it upon us.”
The Susan B. Anthony List and its education arm, the Charlotte Lozier Institute, along with Concerned Women for America and a coalition of nearly 50 pro-life women lawmakers from across the country previously submitted an amicus brief in support of the plaintiffs. Women have been named as plaintiffs in nearly a third of the more than 45 “for-profit” cases filed against the HHS Mandate.
The Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
