Pro-life Republicans unite to ensure medical care for abortion survivors
Washington, D.C. – Ahead of the March for Life, the House of Representatives held a vote on and passed (217-204-1) the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act led by Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO) and backed by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
This victory comes after Senate Democrats blocked the same bill yesterday, standing in the way of medical care for abortion survivors.
In a press conference ahead of today’s vote, Speaker Johnson remarked, “Here’s the question and don’t let anybody distract you from what the question is. If a child is born alive, during an attempted abortion, and is crying and struggling to breathe on the operating table, should the doctor try to keep that child alive, or should the doctor deny that crying newborn child medical care and let the child die?”
SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser celebrated the victory in the House, saying:
“This is a significant moment in history. With the new trifecta of pro-life Republicans in the Senate, House, and White House, one of the first things they chose to act upon was the protection of children. The most modest of ideas – yet the most vital – that we provide medical care to children who are born alive during a botched abortion.
In the last election cycle, we saw over half a billion dollars spent by Democrats, in the general election alone, to defeat Republicans based on the issue of abortion. And they failed, resoundingly. Today, the House of Representatives passed this bill to protect the lives of abortion survivors, ensuring that they receive proper medical care. And while every single Democrat voted against the bill in the Senate, and almost every Democrat in the House, this victory for Life is a step toward justice for abortion survivors. Now Representatives who refuse to protect them must be held accountable by voters. Thank you to Rep. Ann Wagner for spearheading this compassionate bill and House Republican Leadership for making this victory possible.”
