Democrats Previously Blocked Life-Saving Care for Infants Born Alive
Washington, D.C. – Today on the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade and ahead of the March for Life, the nation’s largest annual pro-life demonstration, the U.S. Senate will hold a floor vote on the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act, led by Sens. James Lankford (R-OK) and Jim Banks (R-IN) and backed by Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD). Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO) re-introduced a House companion bill earlier this month.
In remarks on the Senate floor, Thune said, “This straightforward bill simply states that a baby born alive after an attempted abortion is entitled to the same protection and medical care that any other newborn baby is entitled to. This vote will ask Democrats to answer whether a living baby born after an attempted abortion should be provided with medical care or be left to die. It shouldn’t be a hard question.”
In previous Congresses, Senate Democrats filibustered the bill and House Democrats led by Nancy Pelosi refused more than 80 requests by pro-life Republicans to hold a vote.
Dannenfelser issued the following statement ahead of the vote:
“The 2024 elections exposed the reality of babies surviving abortions and being left to die without life-saving medical care. Americans reject this inhumanity and they have clearly rejected the extreme pro-abortion agenda. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to that baby fighting for his or her life, whether in a hospital or an abortion center, whether that little one is deemed ‘wanted’ or not. These children must not be discarded like trash. With a new administration in Washington and new majorities in the Senate and House, there has never been a better or more urgent time to protect the life of every newborn equally. We thank Sens. James Lankford and Jim Banks and Majority Leader Thune for leading the charge in the Senate, and Rep. Ann Wagner for re-introducing this compassionate bill in the House. Standing against infanticide shouldn’t be controversial and we hope there will be bold Democrats who join in to make it a bipartisan effort now.”
