Washington, D.C. – This morning House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) held a press conference with Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO), and other pro-life members of Congress ahead of the Whip’s intended filing of a discharge petition on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, legislation to protect babies born alive in failed abortions. House Democratic Party leaders have refused more than 25 requests by members to vote on the bill. If a majority of representatives sign the petition, it will force a vote by the full House.
Present at the press conference were three abortion survivors: Melissa Ohden, Claire Culwell, and Gianna Jessen; Susan B. Anthony List’s National Campaign Chair Jill Stanek; and Dr. Christina Francis, board chair of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians & Gynecologists (AAPLOG) and an associate scholar with SBA List’s research arm Charlotte Lozier Institute.
Stanek, a former nurse who witnessed babies being born alive and left to die, said:
“Little abortion survivors desperately need Congress to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, to provide them with legal and medical protections and not leave open the decision whether they live or die.”
SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser added:
“Shame on Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats for repeatedly refusing to allow a vote on this compassionate, common-ground bill. Seventy-seven (77) percent of voters nationwide want Congress to protect babies who survive failed abortions, but Democratic Party leaders have doubled down on extremism. Their agenda is radically out of step even within their own rank and file. We thank Whip Scalise and our pro-life House allies for showing heroic leadership in the face of ongoing obstruction. We urge all members of Congress to sign the petition. The American people deserve to know where their representatives stand on infanticide.”
