Notre Dame board member resigns

After the public outcry of the pro-life movement including the Catholic faithful, the newest member of the board of trustees at the University of Notre Dame has stepped down.  Roxanne Martino, a graduate of the school, was recently appointed to the board.  The Cardinal Newman Society revealed that Martino has donated thousands of dollars to EMILY’s List (Early Money Is Like Yeast).  This organization’s mission is: “EMILY’s List is dedicated to electing pro-choice Democratic women to office” as stated on their website.  While Martino and the president of Notre Dame claimed that she did not know about the pro-abortion stance of the organization, they maintained that Notre Dame holds steadfast to Catholic teaching on life.  Additionally, Martino asserted that she completely supports Church teaching on the sanctity of life.  Unfortunately, her words conflict with her actions.  Either Martino really was unaware of the purpose of EMILY’s list or chose to financially support the organization.  In either case, Martino is certainly not the ideal candidate to be a member of the board of trustees at a Catholic institution.

The resignation of Martino is good news for Notre Dame alumni and fans as the university recovers its reputation among pro-lifers and faithful Catholics for inviting President Barack Obama to speak at the 2009 commencement ceremony and giving him an honorary law degree.  This surely is a step in the right direction towards proclaiming the pro-life message.
