The Democratic Party promotes a simple message to women facing unexpected pregnancies: If you are poor and pregnant, abortion is your ticket to “freedom.”
Having grown up in poverty, Lorien understood financial difficulties. At 20 years old she still had no money, but she had her boyfriend and the wonderful son the two of them shared.
When she learned she was unexpectedly pregnant with their second child, her boyfriend became furious. He commanded her to ‘get rid of it’ immediately. Years prior, Lorien faced the same pressure from him and his family to abort their first child, but she was able to fight back. This time, she did not have enough strength to fight their pressure and coercion.
Lorien’s boyfriend presented her with a choice that no woman should ever have to make: abort their baby or be homeless. He even took his manipulation a step further by threatening to withhold all money and support if she did not terminate the life inside of her.
He knew that Lorien had no money to her name and could not survive without his financial support. He used this to manipulate her and coerce her to have an abortion. Tragically, Lorien is not the only woman to experience this kind of pressure, as nearly 70% of women seeking abortion describe their abortions as inconsistent with their own values and preferences, with one in four describing their abortions as coerced.
Lorien felt like she had no other option and showed up to the abortion facility visibly distraught. Tears soaked her face as she told the staff that she wanted to keep her baby. Rather than offering love, support, or financial resources, the center pushed her to have an abortion.
She was poor and felt powerless. Looking back now, she knows that the people around her took advantage of her circumstances.
For 15 years after the abortion, Lorien suffered in silence. She never allowed herself to have any more children because she was convinced she didn’t deserve to be pregnant again.
It took her decades to come to terms with the past and acknowledge the coercion and manipulation she faced from her boyfriend and the abortion center.
Lorien still carries the pain with her today. Each time her son asks why he does not have a brother or sister, she still finds herself with tear-filled eyes, unable to speak the painful truth.
He did have a brother or a sister.
Women like Lorien want to keep their child, but they need support and resources in order to parent. They also need people around them to see the value of their life and their child’s life.
Unfortunately, the Democrats are working to take resources away from women by attacking and maligning pregnancy resource centers. Attorneys general in New York, California and New Jersey have attempted to censor pregnancy centers and stop them from providing lifesaving treatment for women who choose to reverse abortions. Democrats in red states have also targeted funding for pregnancy centers.
All across the country, thousands of pregnancy resource centers exist to serve women who find themselves in situations like Lorien’s. They offer medical services, clothing, housing, education and more – typically at no cost – and most importantly, financial support and stability to prepare moms and their children to thrive long after birth. Leaders in states with pro-life laws protecting unborn children have been making progress on this front by passing new laws to increase funds to pregnancy centers, enact new childcare solutions, and extend Medicaid to postpartum moms.
Lorien needed that support and assurance. Today, her message to the Democratic Party is simple:
“Stop pushing to shut down pregnancy centers and maternity homes. Focus on providing financial and physical resources to women in need who want an alternative to abortion. If you’re going to speak on behalf of all women, don’t forget about the women who want to choose life. Please don’t just value abortion – value us.”
