The legislative battle over spending cuts in the Continuing Resolution (CR) took center stage in the media this week, with many reporters exploring the implications of what they called “social policy riders” attached to the version of the bill passed in the House last month. A Bloomberg wire story on Rep. Mike Pence’s (R-IN) strong stand against Planned Parenthood funding quoted Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) President Marjorie Dannenfelser on the pro-life movement’s efforts: “We are pressing, asking, cajoling, lobbying, saying, ‘This should not be negotiable.’”
On the morning of the House vote on a second short-term CR, SBA List’s opposition to any CR that doesn’t strip Planned Parenthood of its government funds received attention in other national outlets including CBSNews.com. Meanwhile, SBA List’s grassroots letter to the editor campaign got off the ground with opinions from pro-life activists appearing on the Syracuse Post-Standard’s website where, two weeks earlier, the paper tracked the “Women Speak Out: Defund Planned Parenthood” tour bus’ progress through Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle’s (R-NY) district.
After the House voted to pass a CR without a measure to end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, tour bus leader and former Colorado Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave went on Christian radio to express disappointment and hope that the House would stand strong on the next CR vote: “Come three weeks, they’re going to get another test — and I hope they pass the test. At a time of moral outrage and fiscal crisis, now is the time to defund Planned Parenthood.”
