“Corrupt Politicians Act” Undermines Election Transparency, and Makes Credibility Crisis Even Worse

Washington, D.C.  – Yesterday the U.S. Senate Rules Committee held a hearing on S. 1, legislation to override state election laws and further undermine credibility and confidence in U.S. elections. The Election Transparency Initiative, a partnership between American Principles Project (APP) and the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) is opposed to the legislation and has launched a comprehensive grassroots call campaign to urge Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) to reject the bill. Susan B. Anthony List scored against the House version of the bill.

“Arizonans want elections in their state to be simple and secure, easy to vote and hard to cheat,” said National Chairman of the Election Transparency Initiative and former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. “We urge Senator Sinema to listen to her constituents and oppose S. 1, Washington’s attempt to override the state’s election laws. With public trust in elections at an all-time low, voters in Arizona want to see increased security, transparency, and accountability – not a Washington takeover of state elections that serves the interests of corrupt politicians.”

Polling released this Tuesday by the Honest Elections Project shows:

  • 64% of voters, including Black (51%) and Hispanic (66%) voters, as well as urban (59%) and Independent (61%) voters, want to strengthen voting safeguards that prevent fraud – not eliminate them.
  • 77% of voters, including strong majorities of Republicans (92%), Independents (75%), and Democrats (63%) all support requiring voter ID.
    • 64% of Black voters, 77% of Hispanics, and 76% of low-income voters reject the notion that presenting a form of ID at the ballot-box is a “burden.”
  • Two-thirds of voters (66%) support increased protections on absentee voting, like requiring voter ID to vote absentee, which S.1. expressly blocks.
