Governor Eric Holcomb Signs Amended S.B. 1; Law Expected to Prevent 95% of Abortions in Indiana
Washington, D.C. – Acting on the will of Hoosiers, Governor Eric Holcomb signed a law to protect thousands of unborn children and their mothers late Friday night. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America today thanked Governor Holcomb and Indiana legislators for acting to protect the lives of unborn children and their mothers from the violence of abortion in Indiana. The law will go into effect on September 15, 2022.
The new law closes all abortion centers in Indiana, ensuring any abortions performed under certain exceptions are done in medical settings with necessary oversight like the ability to treat life-threatening complications. The law allows for abortions in limited cases including pregnancies resulting from rape and incest, to protect the life of the mother, and if lethal fetal anomalies are diagnosed by a physician. It is expected to prevent an estimated 95% of all other elective abortions.

“After the Dobbs decision sent this issue back to the people in June, the process has worked the way it is supposed to. Elected officials made critical decisions after hearing from thousands of Hoosiers. The Indiana experience is illustrative for other states because it envisions new protections for life in Indiana based on the will of the people, highlighting that our work will continue in the future.”
Since the Dobbs decision, over a dozen states have taken action to protect life. SBA Pro-Life America has launched an interactive map to track life-saving laws in the states and the estimated number of abortions impacted.
