SBA List Praises Senator Deb Fischer for Bold Leadership

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This afternoon the Senate voted against Senator Deb Fischer’s amendment to protect the conscience rights of taxpayers and health care workers against the Obama Administration’s assault on conscience and religious liberty, including the HHS abortion-pill mandate.

“Efforts to protect the conscience rights of pro-life taxpayers as well as health care workers have been thwarted by abortion lobby loyalists,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Polling routinely shows that Americans oppose the use of taxpayer dollars for abortion and do not want health care professionals to be forced to participate in procedures they morally oppose. The senators who voted against Senator Fischer’s amendment are grossly out of stop with their constituents.

“On behalf of all Americans of conscience, we applaud Senator Fischer for her bold leadership and her efforts to defend our most basic freedoms. The so-called accommodations recently announced to the HHS Mandate do nothing to address the concerns of religious and non-religious entities and employers who do not wish to be complicit in the destruction of life through abortion-inducing drugs.”

Senators voting against Sen. Fischer’s amendment who are rated “lean D” by the Cook Political Report include: Sens. Mary Landrieu (LA), Max Baucus (MT), Mark Begich (AK), Kay Hagan (NC), and Mark Pryor (AR).

Polling routinely shows that more than 60 percent of Americans oppose the use of taxpayer dollars for abortion. Polling also shows that 77 percent of Americans believe it is important that health care professionals not be forced to participate in procedures or practices to which they have moral objections.

The Susan B. Anthony List and its affiliated Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women at all levels of government.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
