Poll: Nebraskans Overwhelmingly Support Heartbeat Bill Over Democrats’ Abortion-On-Demand Constitutional Amendment

LINCOLN, NE – Opposing abortion measures are being considered in the Nebraska Legislature. Sen. Megan Hunt’s proposals to establish a constitutional right to abortion up until the moment of birth will be heard by the Health and Human Services Committee tomorrow, while Sen. Joni Albrecht’s bill to protect unborn children with a heartbeat is expected to be scheduled for floor debate soon.

A recent poll from WPA Intelligence shows 58% of Nebraskans support Albrecht’s heartbeat bill that provides exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother. Only 21% of likely voters stand with abortion advocates’ push to establish unlimited abortion on demand in the Nebraska Constitution.

Executive Director of Nebraska Right to Life Sandy Danek shared her reaction:

“Pro-abortion advocates are loud but they don’t represent the people of Nebraska. Nebraskans want to protect unborn babies with a heartbeat, and they overwhelmingly reject the Planned Parenthood agenda of allowing painful late-term abortion up until the time of birth that is being pushed by Sen. Hunt and other extreme abortion advocates.

“The abortion constitutional amendment attempts reveal the true colors of LB626 opponents’ agenda. They want to push Nebraska’s law to extend well beyond the current 20 weeks to 24 weeks and beyond, when a baby can survive outside of the womb. Nebraskans won’t stand for their radicalism.”

The WPA Intelligence poll also revealed Nebraskans were more likely to support a heartbeat bill after they were aware of scientific evidence of fetal development. At six weeks’ gestation, a baby has a steady heartbeat of 110 BPM and has more than a 90% chance of surviving to birth.

If passed, LB626 would protect around 2,000 lives per year.
