Nat’l Pro-life Leaders Urge President to Issue Reagan-era Regulations
Washington, D.C. – Pro-life leaders issued a joint statement today encouraging President Donald Trump to stop taxpayer funding of America’s largest abortion business Planned Parenthood by revising Title X family planning rules.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony List, Penny Nance, President & CEO of Concerned Women for America, Jeanne Mancini, President of the March for Life, Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO Americans United for Life, Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council, and Gary L. Bauer, President of American Values offered the following joint statement:
“President Trump has kept his promise and has delivered huge pro-life victories to the grassroots who worked so hard to elect him. We urge President Trump to once again show decisive leadership and deliver a pro-life victory where Congress has failed. The President can do this by reinstating the Reagan-era regulations to direct taxpayer funding to Title X family planning locations that do not perform or refer for abortions. The pro-life grassroots are furious with the inability of the Republican-controlled Congress to get the job done. We urge President Trump to deliver on a core promise he made in writing to pro-life voters, and show significant progress in the fight to defund Planned Parenthood. Doing so will energize the grassroots across the country as we head into the critical midterm elections.”
Under President Reagan, Title X regulations specifically directed taxpayer funding to Title X family planning locations that do not perform or refer for abortions. The Reagan regulations were upheld by the Supreme Court in 1991 in Rust v. Sullivan. A report issued earlier this year by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) shows that Title X is Planned Parenthood’s second biggest funding stream, generating between $50-$60 million per year.
Over the past weekend rallies were held at more than 140 Planned Parenthood locations throughout the United States to ask the President to take action on stopping taxpayer funding of abortion businesses. This nationwide day of prayer and protest was coordinated by #ProtestPP, a coalition of more than 75 national, state and local pro-life organizations.
Susan B. Anthony List and its partner super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 630,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
