Draft Bill Protects Conscience Rights, Stops Funding for Destructive Research, & Redirects Taxpayer Funds Away from Planned Parenthood

Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations for including important pro-life provisions in the draft Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) funding bill for fiscal year 2018, which will be considered in subcommittee this afternoon.

The bill incorporates the language of the Conscience Protection Act, stops funding for experiments using human tissue from aborted children, and redirects Title X funding away from Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion business.

“We thank pro-life members of the Appropriations Committee, especially Chairman Tom Cole and pro-life champion Rep. Martha Roby, for their leadership on this legislation,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “No American should be compelled to participate in abortion. Moreover, taxpayers should not have to subsidize experiments using the tissue of children destroyed by abortion, or fund Planned Parenthood, which has been caught trafficking in the body parts of aborted children. The provisions in this bill advance the Trump Administration’s pro-life commitments and are a welcome change from the pro-abortion activism of HHS under President Obama. We encourage Congress pass this legislation swiftly to be signed by President Trump.”

“Aborted fetal tissue research is a dwindling and antiquated science, added Dr. David A. Prentice, Vice President and Research Director at Charlotte Lozier Institute. “Taxpayer funds should be focused on modern, successful technologies such as adult stem cells and iPS cells, which are already addressing public health needs. We applaud Chairman Cole and Rep. Roby for including this important language in the bill.”

Susan B. Anthony List and its partner super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 465,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
