Heitkamp Doubles Down on Abortion On-Demand Through Birth, a Major Political Liability with Constituents
Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today slammed U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp for her vote against the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (“Micah’s Law”), which would protect unborn children from late-term abortion after five months of pregnancy, a point by which science shows they can feel pain.
SBA List immediately launched heitkamptooextreme.com and a hard-hitting digital ad campaign to expose Sen. Heitkamp’s extremist views on abortion which are dramatically out of step with the majority of North Dakota voters. The digital campaign will back up the group’s existing ground efforts. Since July 2017, SBA List’s 200+ canvassing team has knocked on more than 320,000 doors across Missouri, Ohio, Florida, and Indiana, with plans to expand.
Polling data commissioned by SBA List and made widely available last fall shows that 56 percent of North Dakota voters support the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and 61 percent said they would be less likely to support Senator Heitkamp if she voted to allow late-term abortion.
“Senator Heitkamp’s vote in support of brutal late-term abortions isn’t just morally abhorrent, it defies national consensus and is a major political liability. Shame on Senator Heitkamp for doubling down in support of abortion on-demand, up until the moment of birth,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The United States is one of only seven nations – including China and North Korea – that allow brutal late-term abortions after five months. Like most Americans, a majority of North Dakota voters want to change the law to protect children more than halfway through pregnancy. Heitkamp failed to stand with her constituents, but she’ll face them at the ballot box in November.”
Support for the legislation is especially high among millennials (78 percent), African-Americans (70 percent), and Hispanics (57 percent). Several national polls have found that as many as 51 percent of Democrats support limiting abortion after twenty weeks.
President Trump has made four key commitments to the pro-life movement, including signing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act into law.
Susan B. Anthony List and its connected super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 600,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
