Law could force SBA List and other entities to pay for elective abortions in health plans, employ individuals directly opposed to mission

Washington, D.C. – This afternoon the U.S. House of Representatives announced it will begin debate Thursday on a resolution to block a discriminatory District of Columbia law from going into effect. The Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Act (RHNDA) could force D.C. employers to cover abortions in their health plans and require pro-life organizations to employ abortion advocates.

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List), which is based in D.C., is urging the House to block the law by voting yes on H.J. Res 43.

“As a pro-life employer in the District of Columbia, the Susan B. Anthony List resolves to fight this outrage born of arrogance and overreach.  We will fight every inch of this battle with the U.S. Constitution as our chief ally. That the city would seek to force us to pay for abortion coverage and employ individuals who oppose our very reason for existence signals a new level of pro-abortion tyranny,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List.  “Our mission is to ensure that every life is welcome and protected in the law.  We work every day with men and women who have suffered in the aftermath of abortion and we proceed with compassion and empathy. This so-called Reproductive ‘Non-Discrimination’ Act, however, is the work of political bullies who find a dearth of votes at the ballot box and legislatures and so attempt to make up for that lack through political jujitsu and intrusive mandates.  We urge Congress and the President to stand up for our constitutional right to engage in the public square in accordance with our deeply-held beliefs about the sanctity of human life and the true needs of women and families.”

The Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, spent $15.25 million in the 2014 election cycle to defeat pro-abortion incumbents and elect pro-life candidates to federal and statewide office. The SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
