Majority of Texans Approve of Measure to Protect Women, Babies from Late-Term Abortion

Washington, D.C – This afternoon the Texas State House formally passed the omnibus Pro-life bill (HB2) by a vote of 96 to 49. The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised the legislation which includes a measure to safeguard babies capable of feeling pain by banning abortion past 20 weeks gestation. The Texas State Senate is expected to vote on the companion bill, SB1, as early as Monday. This week SBA List Vice President for Government Affairs Marilyn Musgrave hand-delivered the signatures of more than 20,000 pro-life activists in support of HB2 and SB1 to Texas legislators.

“Americans in Texas and across the country are overwhelmingly opposed to the brutal, late-term abortions that end the lives of between 15,000 and 18,000 children capable of feeling pain each year,” said Marilyn Musgrave.  “The law should reflect our instinctive resistance to this barbarism – and we applaud Governor Perry and the pro-life Texas state legislators who have been working tirelessly to make this a reality.”

“The recent disturbing behavior displayed by abortion advocates reflect the truth that those opposed to this common ground legislation are more concerned about the institution of abortion rather than the individual lives at stake,” continued SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “As Texas takes another step towards protecting an entire class of unborn children, we continue working to expose the horror of late-term abortion that is occurring nationwide.”

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed legislation to prohibit abortions nationwide past 20 weeks gestation, about the 6-month mark.  According to a January 2013 Gallup poll, 80 percent of Americans reject abortion in the third trimester, and 64 percent reject abortion in the second trimester.

The SBA List has compiled an ever-expanding fact sheet on abortion industry negligence and brutality occurring nationwide including at the hands of abortionist Douglas Karpen in Houston, Texas. In May, former staff members of the Aaron Women’s Clinic brought forward photographic evidence of horrific late-term abortions and potential infanticide committed by Karpen, currently under investigation by Harris County District Attorney’s office.

The Susan B. Anthony List and its affiliated Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women at all levels of government.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
