On Monday, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) declared his candidacy for president of the United States, vowing that he is “In it to win it.” Santorum is a favorite among social conservatives for his unwavering support and vigorous fight to uphold legislation that defends and recognizes the sanctity of life.
Santorum testifies, “There are a lot of people who vote pro-life, but very few people who stand up and fight for life.”
Living the pro-life message begins in the home and Santorum is a sincere pro-life witness and testimony to this belief. During two different pregnancies he and his wife, Karen, were informed that their unborn children had fatal birth defects. Although advised to consider abortion, the courageous couple refused and instead chose to give their children the unalienable right of life; as avowed by Santorum in an interview about his son, “We didn’t give him a death sentence. We gave him a name. Gabriel.”
Additionally, their three-year-old Bella, who has Trisomy 18 (a serious genetic disorder) has defied her fatal diagnosis and has been a tangible source of inspiration and faith. As Santorum affirms, “…we [our family] have also been inspired by her fighting spirit and the miracle of seeing our little flower blossom into a loving joyful child who is at the center of our family life. All children are gift that come with no guarantees. While Bella¹s life may not be long and she requires our constant care, she is worth every tear. Living with Bella has been a course in developing character and virtue – she makes us better. And it’s not just our family; she positively impacts every life she touches. In the end isn¹t that the hope every parent has for his or her child?”
Santorum’s admirable actions as a protector to the unborn, a voice for the voiceless and activist for social justice in the womb make him a candidate to keep an eye out for and follow as the GOP race continues to unravel.
