Last night, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders were finally asked about abortion by Fox News’ Bret Baier after going seven debates without a single question on it. A good summary of the exchange can be found here. SBA List joined pro-abortion group NARAL a month ago in demanding that the candidates be questioned on this important issue.
SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser offered the following comments:
“Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders were finally asked about abortion last night, and we now know why it’s been avoided up until this point: Both oppose legislation that would protect unborn children from brutally painful late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy.
“Clinton’s alleged support of a ‘late pregnancy regulation’ is a total fantasy. She has said by late-term, she means the very end of the third trimester. Her insistence on an exception for ‘health’ would render such a regulation meaningless, and she knows it. A late-term abortion limit beginning at five months based on the pain of the child would actually save lives, protect mothers, and is enthusiastically supported by a majority of Americans, especially women. It has passed the House twice, received majority bipartisan support in its first ever vote in the Senate, and has been passed by 15 states.
“Clinton knows her support for late-term abortion is a liability, and is desperately trying to hide it. SBA List already has hundreds of paid field staff on the ground in key battleground states ensuring voters know the truth about Clinton’s extreme views on abortion.”
National polling by Quinnipiac, National Journal, Huffington Post, NBC/Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post/ABC News all found that a plurality or majority of Americans support limiting abortion after five months and that women support the measure in higher proportions than men.
