The Women’s Health Protection Act Would Radically Expand Abortion on Demand Through Birth and Forced Taxpayer Funding of Abortion
Washington, D.C. – The Subcommittee on Health of the Committee on Energy and Commerce will hold a hearing on the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2019 tomorrow, February 12, 2020 at 10AM in the Rayburn House Office Building in Room 2123.
SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser issued the following comment:
“This radical and egregiously misnamed bill would strike down democratically enacted state and federal protections for unborn children and their mothers nationwide, expanding abortion on demand through birth. It would sweep away even the most modest pro-life protections, such as popular limits on late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy, health and safety standards for abortion facilities, informed consent, and conscience protections. The vast majority of Americans – including many Independents, rank-and-file Democrats, and even those who self-identify as pro-choice – reject this extreme agenda. We thank our pro-life allies in the House and Senate, led by President Trump, for standing up to the Democrats’ extremism and urge them to stop this latest assault on the will of the American people.”
Georgette Forney, Co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign and President of Anglicans for Life will testify at the hearing. Her testimony reads in part:
“Abortion is not the panacea that it is so often portrayed as. In fact, it is often the result of pressure and fear. At Silent No More we help women who regret their abortions heal through sharing their stories… the law before you furthers the lie that abortion is just like any other medical procedure.”
Also testifying is Dr. Teresa Stanton Collett, J.D., director of the Prolife Center at the University of Saint Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her testimony reads in part:
“While the abortion industry consistently promotes the idea that abortion is one of the safest medical procedures in the United States, the evidence offered to support that claim is typically research conducted by proponents of abortion… this act is based on industry slogans, not fact; it is bad public policy; and hinders the state’s duty to protect its citizens.”
A recent paper written by Tom Messner, J.D., Senior Fellow in Legal Policy at SBA List’s research arm, Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), analyzes the Women’s Health Protection Act. The paper reads in part:
“HR 2975 treats abortion like one more “medical procedure” – not like the “unique act” and “grave decision” it really is… the bill excludes important legislative interests that the Supreme Court has expressly recognized. In time, governments have also come to identify new interests… such as protecting unborn children at the time they can feel pain and protecting unborn children from discrimination based on sex, race, or disability.”
