SBA List in the Headlines – March 6 – 12

The steady stream of coverage from last week’s “Women Speak Out: Defund Planned Parenthood” 13-district bus tour continued this week.  Local and national press examined the grassroots show of support for representatives who voted to defund Planned Parenthood in the Continuing Resolution (CR) and disapproval for Members who voted against, noting also the prominence of the abortion issue among the grassroots.  Local media was especially interested in the “dueling” SBA List and Planned Parenthood buses making stops, usually one after the other, in Members’ districts to promote their opposite messages.

CBN’s John Jessup accompanied the “Women Speak Out” tour bus for part of its trip through the Philadelphia-area and reported on the optimism tour speakers and the grassroots activists attending the rallies felt for the eventual defunding of Planned Parenthood thanks to the newly elected pro-life House of Representatives and commitments from GOP leadership.

Widely circulated national papers, like USA Today, analyzed the ongoing budget battle being fought in the nation’s capitol, noting the pressure being put on lawmakers.  It noted that groups like the SBA List and Family Research Council, in coalition with other groups, delivered nearly 1.2 million petitions and e-mails to Congress demanding an end to taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.  The bus tour also made international headlines in the Financial Times’ short list of major “social policy issues” shaping the budget battle.
