Florida Law Protects Unborn Children & Mothers After 15 Weeks, Estimated to Save 3,300+ Lives a Year

Washington, D.C. – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced he is suspending Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren, a pro-abortion Democrat, for violating his oath of office by refusing to enforce state law that protects unborn children and their mothers from late abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The law was signed by Gov. DeSantis in April and took effect July 1.

SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser praised DeSantis, saying:

“Radical pro-abortion Democrats are doubling down on lawlessness in the Dobbs era as the right to protect unborn children and mothers is finally returned to the people. The vast majority of Americans agree brutal late-term abortions when unborn babies feel pain are too extreme, and Floridians duly expressed their will through their legislature and Governor DeSantis. But rogue local officials, together with Democrats in Washington, will stop at nothing to impose their agenda of abortion on demand until birth against the wishes of their constituents.”

Polling released in 2019 shows 76% of Florida voters – including 64% of Democrats, 75% of Independents, 77% of women, and 53% of self-described pro-choice voters – support a law prohibiting late-term abortions (only 24% support allowing late-term abortions). A strong majority of Americans consistently reject abortion extremism.

Dannenfelser continued, “May the governor’s action be a warning to pro-abortion activist public officials who think they can simply refuse to do their job of enforcing democratically enacted pro-life protections. We thank Gov. DeSantis once again for his strong leadership and all our Florida allies standing up to the abortion lobby for women and children.”

Since the Dobbs decision, at least a dozen states have taken action to protect life. SBA Pro-Life America is tracking life-saving laws in the states and the estimated number of abortions impacted, including more than 3,300 lives a year that will be saved by Florida’s 15-week limit on late abortions.

Alternatives to Abortion: Florida legislators have appropriated $4.5 million in funding in FY 2022 for the Florida Pregnancy Care Center Network, which provides pregnancy tests, counseling, health education, wellness exams, and other confidential services at no cost to the client – an increase from $4 million in previous years. Florida pregnancy centers served more than 76,000 women, men, youth and families in 2019, valued at $18.3 million, including nearly $12 million in medical services.
