Popular, Common Ground Measure Should be Enacted Nationwide

Washington, D.C. – Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised Texas Governor Rick Perry and the Texas state legislature for safeguarding babies capable of feeling pain by banning abortion past 20 weeks gestation. The new law signed by Governor Perry today also strengthens health and safety standards for abortion facilities.

“This is a lifesaving victory for Texas women and unborn children,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “We thank Governor Perry, the pro-life legislators, and the entire statewide coalition including Texas Right to Life, Texas Alliance for Life, Concerned Women for America of Texas, 40 Days for Life, and so many others for making this happen.

“Texas’ monumental new law sheds light on the urgent need for action in the U.S. Senate. Unborn children and women deserve federal protection from horrific late-term abortions. Polls consistently show that the majority of Americans support protecting babies and women late in pregnancy and Senate Majority Leader Reid should bring this to the floor for a vote. If he and his Senate colleagues stand with the American people against the barbarism of late-term abortion, they have nothing to fear from a Senate vote. Conversely, remaining silent on this – especially in the aftermath of Kermit Gosnell and other abortion clinic horrors – would be both a moral and political mistake.”

“Real lives are at stake,” continued Dannenfelser. “Washington, as well as the abortion lobby, must not be allowed to ignore the women and babies suffering barbaric late-term abortions nationwide.”

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed legislation to prohibit abortions nationwide past 20 weeks gestation, about the 6-month mark. New national polling from the Huffington Post shows that by a margin of 59 percent to 30 percent, Americans favor a federal law prohibiting abortion after 20 weeks. This includes Americans who are in favor of abortion generally (30 percent) and those conflicted on the issue (70 percent).

The SBA List has compiled an ever-expanding fact sheet on abortion industry negligence and brutality occurring nationwide including at the hands of abortionist Douglas Karpen in Houston, Texas. In May, former staff members of the Aaron Women’s Clinic brought forward photographic evidence of horrific late-term abortions and potential infanticide committed by Karpen, currently under investigation by Harris County District Attorney’s office.

The Susan B. Anthony List and its affiliated Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women at all levels of government.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
