Children Need Protection from Abortion-Inducing Drugs

Washington, D.C – A federal judge today ruled that the “morning-after pill” must be available over the counter without a prescription, even to girls younger than 16. The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) blasted the ruling and the abortion lobby for seeking to expand access to these drugs without regard to the safety of young girls.

“Teen girls need parents, not unfettered access to abortion-inducing drugs,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. “Judge Korman’s decision is reckless and denies girls the protection that comes along with the involvement of parents and doctors.

“In 2011, President Obama and HHS Secretary Sebelius agreed that requiring a prescription for potentially dangerous drugs is common sense. We should not be making it easier for young girls to access abortifacient drugs that end life at an unknown consequence to the young girl herself. Abortion extremists like Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights who praised today’s ruling show a complete lack of concern for the health of teens and the rights of parents.”

Previously in 2011, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius overruled a recommendation by the Food and Drug Administration to make the morning after pill available for all ages without a prescription.

This year, HHS Secretary Sebelius also admitted that emergency contraception works as an abortifacient drug by inhibiting the implantation of a fertilized egg: “Emergency contraceptive pills . . . ; they act by delaying or inhibiting ovulation, and/or altering tubal transport of sperm and/or ova (thereby inhibiting fertilization), and/or altering the endometrium (thereby inhibiting implantation).”  U.S. Department of Justice, representing Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, January 18, 2013, in “Brief for the Appellants,” pages 4-5, in Newland v. Sebelius, No. 12-1380 (10th Cir.) http://www.adfmedia.org/files/NewlandAppealDOJbrief.pdf

The Susan B. Anthony List and its affiliated Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women at all levels of government.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
