Filibuster Protects WV Values; Eliminating or Weakening It Would Allow Extremists to Impose Taxpayer-Funded Abortion, Expand the Supreme Court, Seize Federal Control of Elections
Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) after he wrote in a Washington Post op-ed this week, “There is no circumstance in which I will vote to eliminate or weaken the filibuster.”
“We thank Senator Manchin for remaining firmly committed to the filibuster in the face of enormous pressure from leaders of his party,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The legislative filibuster helps protect West Virginia’s pro-life values. Eliminating it would enable pro-abortion extremists to shut out West Virginians’ voice in the Senate and impose a radical, deeply unpopular agenda – including forcing taxpayers to pay for abortions, enlarging the Supreme Court to stack it with pro-abortion justices, and launching a federal takeover of elections to override state laws that have broad bipartisan support. We continue mobilizing our grassroots activists in the Mountain State to show their gratitude for Manchin’s courageous stance and encourage him to keep standing strong.”
Susan B. Anthony List’s ongoing six-figure campaign to thank Senator Manchin includes radio ads, digital ads, a grassroots phone call campaign, polling, and a statewide media tour.
A February 2021 poll commissioned by SBA List and conducted by West Virginia-based Mark Blankenship Enterprises found that most West Virginia voters are opposed to federal policy that would only be made possible if the filibuster is removed:
- 64% of WV voters strongly oppose expanding the Supreme Court to add more justices
- 62% of WV voters strongly oppose using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion in the U.S.
- 64% of WV voters strongly oppose using American taxpayer dollars to promote abortion overseas
Further, 75% of West Virginia voters said it is very important that their U.S. senator does what is right for West Virginia, even if it means voting against their party.
In 2018, West Virginians voted for a pro-life amendment to their state constitution. SBA List’s West Virginia field team was active on the ground, visiting more than 110,000 voters in the Mountain State urging them to vote yes on Amendment 1.
