Popular Bill Would Limit Puerto Rico’s Extreme Abortion Laws
Washington, D.C. – Pro-life lawmakers in Puerto Rico are seeking votes to override Governor Ricardo Rosselló’s promised veto of the “Law for the Protection of Women and the Preservation of Life” (PS 950), which would require medical care for babies born alive in failed abortions, informed consent for women seeking abortions and parental consent for minors, and health and safety standards for abortion facilities. The bill passed with large majorities in both houses of the legislature earlier this month.
The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) responded:
“We support our Puerto Rican allies and encourage lawmakers to stand up to Governor Rosselló and the abortion lobby to enact this popular pro-life bill,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Puerto Rico’s current abortion laws allow virtually unlimited abortion on demand through birth and do not even protect babies born alive in failed abortions. Like most Americans, the citizens of Puerto Rico overwhelmingly reject this extreme status quo. They and their representatives deserve to have their voice heard and their will respected.”
SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
