Conscientious Objectors Should Never be Forced to Provide Abortion-inducing Drugs in Their Health Plans
Washington, D.C. – In response to news that the Supreme Court will once again hear the case of the Little Sisters of the Poor against the burdensome Obama-era HHS abortifacient drug mandate, the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) released the following statement:
“The Little Sisters of the Poor simply want to carry out their mission of love for the elderly, peaceably and in accordance with their deeply-held beliefs. Instead they have been threatened with crushing fines and repeatedly dragged to court to defend themselves,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “President Trump took strong steps to put this nonsense to an end and his administration’s rule should be upheld. No one – not Catholic nuns who care for the elderly poor, and not moral objectors like Susan B. Anthony List – should ever be forced by the government to provide abortion-inducing drugs in their health care plans. The government simply lacks any interest sufficient to justify such an intrusion on fundamental American liberties. We are pleased the Supreme Court is stepping in to solve this issue once and for all. Conscience rights and religious freedom are important parts of American history and tradition, and the government, state-level or federal, doesn’t need nuns to deliver abortion inducing drugs to women.”
The Supreme Court has twice ruled in favor of the Little Sisters of the Poor. In 2018 the Trump administration finalized new regulations that protect both religious and moral objectors from the burdensome Obama-era HHS abortifacient drug mandate. However, the Little Sisters remain threatened by a lawsuit by Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro and a recent 3rd Circuit ruling against them. The case is Little Sisters of the Poor v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
SBA List is a network of more than 837,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
