Washington, D.C. – Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) slammed Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL) for voting against the motion to proceed to the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2019 (S. 109), legislation establishes a permanent, government-wide prohibition on federal funding for abortion, prohibits federal subsidies in the form of Obamacare tax credits for health plans that include abortion, and strengthens disclosure requirements for plans that include abortion.

“Senator Jones has used his short time in the Senate to advance a radical pro-abortion agenda that is out of step with Alabama voters,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Last night, he cast a vote in favor of taxpayer funding of abortion on demand. Last year, he voted in favor of late-term abortion, in favor of funding abortion giant Planned Parenthood, and voted against confirming Justice Kavanaugh. We have very little doubt that when his pro-abortion record is exposed to the voters, Senator Jones will be soundly defeated at the ballot box next November.”

Terry Lathan, Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, also responded:

“Senator Doug Jones has once again voted against the will of his constituents, this time, against the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. Clearly, Sen. Jones believes that the hardworking people of Alabama should be using their tax dollars to support an act they morally oppose. After voting no on Justice Brett Kavanaugh and now voting no on a pro-life issue which the majority of Alabamians support, his approval rating that has plummeted 17 points is matching the voices of Alabama citizens. Senator Jones has failed the overwhelmingly pro-life state he represents time and time again—proving the need for more pro-life leadership in the Senate.”

Congressional Democrats are wildly out of step on this issue, having pledged their opposition to the Hyde Amendment, longstanding policy that prevents taxpayer funding of abortion on demand and has saved more than two million lives. Marist polling released this week reveals most Americans (54 percent) oppose taxpayer funding of abortion at home and 75 percent oppose using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion abroad, including 80 percent of Independents, 56 percent of Democrats, and 64 percent of people who call themselves pro-choice.

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
