Teal was a hot color Thursday as a sea of grassroots activists from across the country filled the halls of the U.S. Capitol, sharing one message: Defund Big Abortion.
As Congress tackles its first budget bill of President Trump’s second term, 70% of voters are concerned about waste and fraud in government spending. Members of Congress and those close to the president like Elon Musk have zeroed in on Planned Parenthood – the nation’s largest abortion business – as an example. Earlier this week, the Trump administration indicated plans to freeze tens of millions in Title X family planning grants to entities like Planned Parenthood pending a review of their practices.
➡ Top Five Reasons Planned Parenthood Doesn’t Deserve Our Tax Dollars
Starting early in the morning, more than 300 pro-life constituents from 39 states recruited by SBA Pro-Life America, including hundreds of students, reached nearly every Republican office – both the House and Senate – urging their representatives to defund Planned Parenthood of approximately half a billion dollars in taxpayer funds through the budget reconciliation process.
SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser explains in an op-ed:
Reconciliation is a complicated process, but the key is, these bills can pass the Senate with a simple majority rather than the usual 60 votes needed to break a filibuster. With a complete GOP majority in Washington, this is a huge opportunity we cannot squander.
To start off, the activists heard from Dannenfelser, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Whip Tom Emmer, Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Brett Guthrie (Kentucky), and Rep. Bob Onder (Missouri) – a pro-life doctor and attorney. Then, they got a quick course in Lobbying 101 from SBA’s government affairs team.
It was a family effort, with many bringing their children – the best lobbyists of all.
Barbara, a volunteer from North Carolina, shared her motivation for joining Lobby Day: “I want to remind my representative that their constituents do care about this issue. Even though there may not be many people from my district who can come to D.C. and lobby for this important issue, it’s important for them to know that, even if they don’t see us on a daily basis, we are passionate about it and deeply care about defunding Big Abortion.”
Friends of SBA like Melissa Ohden, founder of The Abortion Survivors Network, and Mayra Rodriguez, a former Planned Parenthood employee and whistleblower who recently joined SBA’s podcast to recount her experiences, joined in.
Media coverage from the day included:
Participants in the day of action included Americans United for Life, Anglicans For Life, CatholicVote, Choose-Life.org, Cincinnati Right to Life, Concerned Women for America, EFRAT – C.R.I.B (Committee for the Rescue of Israel’s Babies), Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Family Policy Alliance, Family Research Council, Human Coalition, Liberty Counsel Action, Life Issues Institute, Live Action, Louisiana Right to Life, March for Life, National Association of State Pregnancy Wellness Coalitions, National Black Pro-Life Union, National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), National Right to Life Committee, Ohio Right to Life, Priests for Life, Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising, S.M.A.R.T. Women’s Healthcare/LifeVictory Enterprises LLC, Stanton Public Policy Center, Students for Life Action, Tennessee Right to Life, The Abortion Survivors Network, The Cassidy Law Firm, and Thomas More Society.
It follows a letter sent to members of Congress, signed by over 150 national and state pro-life leaders representing groups from all 50 states, encouraging them to seize the moment and stop the flow of American tax dollars toward the abortion industry.
And, as Dannenfelser told members of the media in describing the strength, unity and hope of the pro-life movement, it’s not the end:
“I can tell you one thing, this movement is completely unified in its first priority, and that is to defund big abortion in this reconciliation bill, hopefully by Memorial Day.”
“But until then, we’ve got a lot of work to do,” she continued. “We’re going to go back to those halls in Congress and defund big abortion.”
