Incumbent Senator Nelson is an Abortion Extremist Who Betrayed Constituents on Crucial Vote to Stop Late-term Abortion

Washington, D.C.  – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today praised Florida Governor Rick Scott’s decision to run for U.S. Senate against Senator Bill Nelson.

“We are encouraged that pro-life Governor Rick Scott has entered the Senate race in Florida,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Senator Bill Nelson has a record of abortion extremism. Earlier this year, he was a no-show for the crucial vote on popular legislation to limit late-term abortion after five months of pregnancy. He previously voted against the bill in 2015. The United States is one of only seven nations – including China and North Korea – that allow abortion on-demand up until the moment of birth. Like most Americans, a majority of Florida voters want to change the law to protect these vulnerable unborn children. SBA List’s field team has been on the ground in Florida for months, meeting voters at their homes to educate them about Senator Nelson’s extreme record. He will be held accountable at the ballot box in November.”

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, or “Micah’s Law,” would protect unborn children from late-term abortion after five months of pregnancy, a point by which science shows they can feel pain.

Immediately following the U.S. Senate vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, SBA List launched nelsontooextreme.com and a hard-hitting digital ad campaign to expose Sen. Nelson’s extremist views on abortion. The digital campaign backs up the group’s existing ground efforts. Since July 2017, more than 300 canvassers have visited more than 620,000 homes across Ohio, Missouri, Florida, and Indiana, with plans to expand, reaching out to low-turnout pro-life voters as well as Democratic women and Hispanics to educate them on their Senator’s record on life.

Polling data commissioned by SBA List and made widely available last fall shows that 59 percent of Florida voters support the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and 46 percent said they would be less likely to support Senator Nelson if he voted to allow late-term abortion.

Support for the legislation is especially high among millennials (78 percent), African-Americans (70 percent), and Hispanics (57 percent). Several national polls have found that as many as 51 percent of Democrats support limiting abortion after twenty weeks.

President Trump has made four key commitments to the pro-life movement, including signing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act into law.

Susan B. Anthony List and its partner super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 630,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
