Pro-Life Advocates Look to AG Blanche to Protect Women & Save Thousands of Babies’ Lives

Toledo, Ohio – A former medical resident accused of poisoning his pregnant girlfriend with mail-order abortion drugs was sentenced on Friday to six months in jail and two years’ probation.

Jona Affholder of Ohio, the survivor, told her story in a Daily Wire op-ed in June. Her ordeal is highlighted in a recent Free Press report on the absence of regulation and shocking ease with which abusers obtain these dangerous drugs online under rules begun by the Biden administration.

Hassan Abbas admitted using his estranged wife’s identity fraudulently to buy abortion drugs online, crushing them, administering them to Affholder, and then throwing the remainder out a window. He pleaded no contest to unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, among other felonies. Two other charges of abduction and tampering with evidence were dismissed under a plea agreement.

Abbas’ defense accused Affholder of lying about the death of her unborn child, even while acknowledging her as a victim. A county judge described the defendant as “not credible,” “selfish” and “self-centered”—yet Abbas could still be out of prison by spring.

Louisiana is suing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over the Biden rule allowing abortion drugs to be sent through the mail without in-person doctor visits. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America has called on the U.S. Department of Justice to end the mail-order of mifepristone by settling Louisiana v. FDA. Prior to his confirmation, Attorney General Todd Blanche told the Senate Judiciary Committee, “We are not in any way defending what Biden and his administration did,” and a group of faith leaders he was working “so that the Dobbs decision becomes permanent in every single state” in relation to abortion drugs.

SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser responded to the sentencing:

“Thanks to the Biden mail-order abortion drug rule, abusers can buy deadly drugs online as easily as ordering an Amazon package. They can viciously attack women and kill babies, and our laws are so inconsistent, they can be back on the street in no time at all. Attorney General Blanche is right: selling ‘death in a pill’ is evil and there must be accountability. There is no defending mail-order abortion drugs, and national leadership is clearly needed to stop more violence, criminality and tragic loss of life. We continue to encourage the DOJ to settle the case with Louisiana and we’re hopeful decisive action is coming soon. By doing so, AG Blanche has the opportunity to save approximately 15,000 unborn babies’ lives a month in pro-life states alone where abortion drug sellers, abetted by Democrat-led states, currently break the law with impunity.

“Every Democrat running for office must also be made to answer for horrific crimes against women and children nationwide, directly made possible by their embrace of mail-order abortion. Leading Democrats are grossly out of touch with reality, parroting the old line of ‘my body, my choice’ while ignoring the growing toll of abortion drug coercion. This year’s elections truly present a stark contrast between common sense and extremism. Republicans must go on offense and remind America they are the party standing with the most vulnerable: unborn babies and their mothers.”

A new study from the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee exposes the dangerous practices of abortion drug manufacturers, finding that even the minimal remaining safety regulations are not being upheld, especially in online situations. These findings reinforce recent research from the Charlotte Lozier Institute showing 81% of online abortion businesses send mifepristone to kill unborn children far beyond the 10-week timeframe the FDA has established, putting women at increased risk for life-threatening complications.

Mail-order abortion drugs are enabling bad actors nationwide:

• In Kentucky, a man has been formally indicted for allegedly switching his girlfriend’s medication with an abortion drug.
• A Texas man faces criminal charges after authorities say he slipped abortion drugs to a pregnant woman—far past the FDA’s recommended timeframe—tragically killing her unborn daughter, Presley Mae, at approximately 14 weeks. Reportedly, the mother refused the man’s demands for her to abort her child, including his repeated offers to fund her out-of-state travel for an abortion.
• In North Carolina, an 18-year-old ordered the drugs online and gave birth to a 31-week-old baby in a toilet. First responders performed CPR on the infant and revived its pulse before transporting the baby to the hospital.

 A nationwide survey conducted by Cygnal this year found Republican primary voters overwhelmingly disapprove of allowing mail-order abortion drugs. Last fall, McLaughlin & Associates also found 7 in 10 likely voters—including 57% of liberal voters—approve of requiring a doctor visit to receive a prescription for abortion drugs.
