Cathy has been a supporter of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America (SBA) for six years. This year, she and her husband will be traveling all the way from Phoenix, Arizona, to attend the SBA Pro-Life America Gala in Washington, D.C. on April 29th. The Gala promises to be a historic evening, celebrating the pro-life movement’s successes and providing a powerful call to action as we continue the fight for every baby and every mom. The event will feature many notable pro-life leaders, including our keynote, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, along with Senators Lindsey Graham (SC), James Lankford (OK), Tim Sheehy (MT), and Bernie Moreno (OH).
As Cathy prepares for the event, we spoke with her about her support of SBA, why she’s looking forward to this year’s Gala, and what she hopes to see in the future of the pro-life movement.
SBA: To start, how did you first get connected with SBA? When did you first hear about the organization, and what initially drew you to support us?
Cathy: “My husband and I had been supporting some organizations that focused on promoting strong families and pro-life values. Then one day out of the blue we received a letter in the mail from SBA. I wasn’t familiar with the group at the time, so I reached out to a friend of mine who’s very involved in the movement and asked if he knew anything about them. He spoke very highly of SBA and the work they were doing, so I looked into it myself. After learning more and talking with people I trusted, I really felt like this was an organization I wanted to support. I’ve been a donor ever since.”
SBA: Have you attended an SBA Gala before, or will this be your first one? If you’ve been in the past, what was your impression of it — what stood out to you or made it memorable?
Cathy: “This will actually be our first Gala, and we’re really looking forward to it. We have attended other SBA events, including Susan B. Anthony’s Pro-Life America Founders Summit in 2023, and it was such a beautiful, well-organized gathering. There were powerful speakers like Vice President (Senator of Ohio at the time) JD Vance and Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and it was incredibly encouraging to be in a room full of people who care deeply about protecting life. I had the chance to talk with Dr. Ingrid Skop, the Vice President and Director of Medical Affairs at Charlotte Lozier Institute, about the direction of their work. My husband also had a great time connecting with Frank Cannon, SBA’s Chief Political Strategist — they ended up talking about the pro-life cause and cigars. What really stuck with us was how professional, inspiring, and thoughtfully executed the event was. That’s what made us so excited to attend our first Gala, we know it will be something really special and inspiring.”
SBA: What made you want to attend this year’s Gala? Was there something about this moment or this year that made it feel especially important to be there?
Cathy: “We’re not just attending because of how beautiful and inspiring SBA’s past events have been, though that certainly made us excited. Our biggest reason for coming is to show SBA’s president Marjorie Dannenfelser and the whole SBA team that they’re supported. The pro-life movement had some major wins recently, including the GOP securing the presidency, holding the Senate, and maintaining control of the House. But I think there’s this feeling floating around that the fight is over and maybe the pro-life movement can take a break. In reality, there’s still so much work to be done to protect babies and support moms. We want to be at this Gala in person to stand with the movement, to say: we’re still in this, and we’re still fighting.”
SBA: Looking ahead, what gives you hope for the future of the pro-life movement — and how do you see SBA continuing to play a role in that?
Cathy: “I think it’s the people. Within SBA, the leadership and the team working alongside Marjorie give me a lot of hope. They’re smart, passionate, and deeply committed. More broadly, I’ve attended other pro-life events recently and met so many young, family-oriented leaders who are not only driven and thoughtful but also starting families of their own. Seeing so many 30-somethings stepping up to lead in this movement is incredibly encouraging. On top of that, the number of pro-life elected officials willing to speak out and take action, many of whom are involved with SBA and speaking at the Gala, really shows me that the future of the movement is in good hands. That’s what gives me optimism.”
